Merry Meet All,
If you are eager to start growing food, consider growing alfalfa seeds to welcome the spring season. I like Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds, the ones you see in the small green plastic bags. The type I have is called Sandwich Booster and contains clover, alfalfa, radish, and green kale. The stuff is delicious and I always add it to my salads. Oh it tastes so good. It is organic too!
Here is how you can make your own. It is easy to do. Find and sterilize a large clear mason jar. There are two methods shown here but the method I used was the jar method. Soak the seeds for two to six hours. Put one to two tablespoons of seeds in a wide mouthed jar. Cover jar with screen or mesh and secure with a rubber band. Add water, swirl and drain. Refill with 1 cup of water. Soak seeds for two to six hours. Drain water.
Rinse the seeds twice a day by refilling with water and gently swirling. Drain the water. Invert the jar and prop at an angle in a sink or bowl. Keep the jar out of sunlight. In time, the seeds will sprout and grow to a bigger size so make sure the jar is large.
The sprouts are ready to eat in three to six days. Keep in the jar in a sealed container. Store the bag of seeds in a cupboard and out of direct sunlight.
The second method
Rinse enough seed to fill the bottom of a sprouting tray. Cover seeds with water for two to six hours. Smaller seeds that fall through the cracks of the tray can be grown in a jar (why I prefer the jar method.) Drain, and tilt the tray to remove the excess water. Spread seed evenly on the bottom of the sprouting tray. Cover with lid or plastic bag.
Rinse twice a day. Remove the lid and rinse tray with a mister or dipping in a sink of water. Be sure not to lose the seeds.
These sprouts contain no harmful chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides and used environmentally friendly methods. The seeds were not grown from genetically modified seeds. That sounds delicious to me.
