Samhain ritual of life and death

CIMG2235

Merry meet all,

Here is a ritual you can perform to celebrate life and death. Samhain is the time of being between the worlds. Decorate your altar with symbols like skulls, pomegranates, pumpkins, and black and white candles. You will need black, red and white ribbons.

Perform this ritual outdoors, if possible. Cast a circle, and an extra protective circle to shield you from the energies around you. Say:

Samhain is here, and it is a time of transitions. Winter approaches and summer dies. Now is the time of the Dark Mother, a time of death and dying. We must remember our ancestors, the Ancient Ones.

Place some rosemary on the altar. If you are doing this as part of a group ceremony, pass the rosemary around the circle to each person before placing on the altar. Say:

Rosemary is for remembrance of those who have gone before us and of our ancestors. We will remember.

Say: The north is cold and earth turns inward. Spirits of the earth, we welcome you and know you shall envelop us in death.

Turn to face east and say:

The east is for beginnings. The earth grows cold to warm in the spring. Spirits we welcome you.

Face south, saying:

The south is a land of sunlight and fire, and flames warms our hearts as we remember those who have passed. Spirits of Fire, we welcome you, knowing your flames will transform us in death.

Face west, saying:

The west is a place of underground rivers, and the endless waves wash the sea, Spirits of water, we welcome you, knowing you will carry us as we eventually greet death.

Light the black candle, saying:

The Wheel of the Year turns once more, as we cycle into darkness.

Next, light the white candle, saying:

At the end of the darkness comes light. When spring returns, we shall celebrate light once more

Each coven member then takes a ribbon- one white, one black, and one red, Say:

White for life, white for black, red for rebirth. We bind these strings together remembering those we have lost.

Knot and braid them together. As you do so, focus on the good memories of those who you have lost in life. When you are all done, say:

Please join me in chanting as you work your energy and love into your cards:

The corn falls from the grain, all that dies shall rise again. As the seeds fall to the earth, we celebrate life, death and rebirth.

Everyone can take their ribbons home with them to place on their altar. They can empower the ribbons on the altar to remember those who have gone before them and charge the ribbons with the altar energy.

Blessed Be, Lady Spiderwitch )O(
