Yule Designs

Merry meet all,

Recently on the weekend I had some fun. I attended the long awaited book launch where I gave a poetry reading of my now published poem. The poem was titled The Sawbug’s Toil. I then signed what seemed like 300 copies of the book Whispers of Mermaids and Wonderful Things by Sheree Fitch and Anne Hunt.

The book launch was a success. I am proud to have been a part of that. I look forward to new opportunities. I received a book I won in the mail titled Gideon by Alex Gordon. I shall enjoy the book, I am sure.

Yule is right around the corner. I spied snow on the ground. I have been preparing for Yule. I went on a long nature walk the other day. I enjoyed walking through the paths, gorgeous autumn trees hanging overhead, and the crisp chill hint of winter in the air. Twigs cracked underfoot, squirrels chirruped, and leaves fluttered to the ground. I collected pine cones by the Armdale ocean and acorns. I found a crab shell and a mollusk shell too.

I plan to use the pine cones and acorns for Yule. I have begun an herbal yule spice jar for a friend for Yule. When I get my money, I plan to buy holiday fabric and start making gifts and decorations for myself and others. I am eager to get started. I have a pattern for a Yule stocking and browsed through my fave fabric store for inspiration. I was excited to discover that Fabricville had everything I need to get started. All I need is some cash.

For my herbal spice jar for a friend, I blended a pine cone, dried orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, pine needles and added it all to a jar. I will add the dried pomegranate rind to the mixture. I want to decorate the jar. The library books about crafts that I borrowed will help me with decorating the jar.

I shall post more here about preparing for Yule.

Altar Decoration for Yule

Merry meet all,

Winter is upon us. The chill of winter bites at us as we travel to work or holiday shopping. Be inspired by the winter colors for your altar decorations. Blues, silvers and whites as well as red, greens and golds correspond with winter.

Add solar symbols to your altar. The Solstice is about the return of the sun. Pine cones, evergreen boughs, sprigs of holly, a Yule log and or antlers. They all represent the Winter Solstice season. Candles in winter colors, antlers, mistletoe, a bowl of snow, bells and sun wheels reflect winter.

The Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year. Burn a Yule log. Be sure to supervise to avoid a fire. Check your smoke alarms that they are well functioning first.

Evergreen, fir, spruce and pine are popular woods to use for a ritual or altar decoration. Their scents invoke those fresh earthy scents. Cinnamon, allspice, clove and nutmeg are earthy and spicy. Nuts and dried fruits can be added to an altar or a gingerbread house!

The altar cloth can be a white color or blue and silver. My altar cloth is sheer and has a snowflake print on it. It is reversible and switches between silver and gold depending on which side faces up.

Then once the altar is dressed and assembled, smudge it with sage and an altar cleansing potion. Be sure to clean the altar area beforehand. Enjoy your seasonal winter altar. Have a merry Winter Solstice.

Merry meet all

Against my will, here I am, held hostage by winter. We had what is hopefully the worst winter storm of 2015. Halifax is buried under an ocean of snow. Icicles decorate the houses and I hear people shovelling even with the windows closed, I started on an indoor windowsill garden.

I am growing lavender from seed! I tucked  lavender seeds in a damp folded paper towel which I put into a labeled clear ziploc bag. The seeds spouted and are now hopefully growing well in the small starter pots. They will grow there for a while. A seed is made up of an embryo, and a seed coating. The embryo is the plant formed from the union of a male and female plant cell during fertilization. The embryo puts out shoots and roots once germination occurs.

I checked my lavender seedlings. They are growing and facing up to the sun. I checked the seeds in the ziploc baggie and nothing today. I will keep checking. I also put some astilbe seeds in a damp folded paper towel into a ziploc bag. Astilbe seeds look like tiny insects. I like staring at seeds using my magnifying glass. It is how I was able to see the tender lavender shoots.

It may winter outdoors but in here, plants are growing! I am also growing garden sage, tulsi, genovese basil, feverfew and milk thistile. They are all started from seed. I love beginning from seed. It does feel real good. While I pore over seed catalogues, I may dream of spring. Wish winter away.

Blessed Be, Lady Spiderwitch )O(

Merry meet all,

It’s officially mid way through January. Personally, I find this season and time of year the hardest to get through. The fact that I planted spring bulbs and garlic cheers me and may help me get through winter. Also, Imbolc is on its way.

The moon is in its waning crescent phase. It is nearing New Moon which happens on January 20th.  The Full Moon occurs on February 3rd. On a New Moon, you can focus on what you want to welcome into your life. On a Full Moon, honor the Divine by performing a drawing down the moon ritual.

With the upcoming significant moon phases and Imbolc around the corner, there is much to prepare for. A tree outside my window glistens in the sunlight. Chickadees flit to the bird feeder in my garden for seeds. Even in the dead of winter, there is life.

Blessed Be, Lady Spiderwitch )O(

A snowy Esbat

Merry meet all,

Today it is blustery and snowy. I am not going anywhere in this weather. No one is. Not until the snow plow clear the roads and it is safe enough to leave the house. The sky is completely cloudy and grey, like a heavy grey mantle hovering over the city. Snow blankets my garden. I hope the stray cat and birds keep warm in their shelter, wherever they are.

In this weather, it will be hard to visualize the moon tonight. I think I will make snow a part of my esbat, like putting snow in a bowl and then sending it energy and then casting it outside again. Or maybe I shall only perform a meditation.I mean, this is very different from performing an esbat in the heat of summer.

Regardless, I wish you all a snowy magical esbat. The earth hibernates deep under the snow and the moon veils herself from us. This is the time to turn inward and reflect on things you wish to change.

Blessed Be, Lady Spiderwitch )O(

The Beauty of Winter

Merry meet all,

The winter chill bites at us as we bustle about town. I walked on the nature trail this morning and I took some beautiful photos of the garden and snowy leaves. Magically speaking, Mercury has turned direct. I am relieved, to say the least. The Moon has entered Aries and Neptune has gone direct.

The Full Moon comes on the 17th. The Full Moon begins at 10 am and enters Gemini. Gemini is an air sign and represents the time for shortcuts, communication, games, and fun. Have a magical and fun esbat on the 17th! This full moon is known as the Hunter’s Moon and Snow Moon. Concentrate on the transition from fall to winter and how gracefully nature turns season. Think of how you can honor a transition occurring in your life and how you can accept the changes it brings. Decorate your altar and light white candles. Snow is pure and cold.

The Celtic Tree Month of Elder begins on November 25th. Before we know it, the Wheel of the Year will turn to Yule. I’ll post more about how to prepare for Yule.

Blessed Be,

Lady Spiderwitch )O(

Winds of Change

Merry Meet Everyone,

Have you felt the stirrings of early spring? Spring is here and winter, the Crone’s time, is pushed down to make way for the time of the Maiden. The young sprouts push out of the frozen yet unthawing cold earth. Buds are ripe to bursting on the tree boughs. The wind is slightly harsh yet warm at the same time. Change is coming.

I welcome the change of the seasons. I always look forward to spring. I have a garden and am excited about the new green shoots in the garden. My woodruff, lemon balm, chives, yarrow, lady’s mantle, crocuses, snowdrops and tulips are the first to show their green faces. I cleared away the leaves to reveal the dark soil beneath.

I have other changes in my life, besides gardening. My landlord is retiring from being a landlord and is now passing on the crown to someone else, so to speak. I have made changes to my wardrobe. I think there is room for more so I eagerly await to see what may come my way. Are you finding spring heralding any changes in your own lives? Take stock and record it in your personal journal or Book of Shadows. Take time for reflection. Welcome change in all of its forms. I hope that the winds of change bring to you what you hoped for.

Blessed Be,
lady Spiderwitch
